Kavi® Showcase Help

Chapter 2. Gating Profile and Catalog Item Display

Overview

There are many options that your organization may use to control how Profiles and Catalog Items are displayed in its Kavi Showcase installation. This includes what kinds of information are displayed (e.g., whether graphics are included, and if so, what size, etc.), whether featuring is enabled or new additions are flagged, and what rules are used to gate display. This document focuses on describing the ways that display eligibility can be managed in Kavi Showcase. For information on featuring, see Featuring. For information on the options that control how Profiles and Catalog Items are displayed, see the page help for the Super Admin tool Configure Public Display.

Enabling Profiles and Catalog Items

The Configure Public Display tool can be configured to display a Profile Directory only, or a Catalog as well. This document assumes Kavi Showcase has been configured to display Catalog Items as well as Profiles. If your organization displays Profiles only, ignore the sections of this document that describe Catalog Item display.

Profile and Catalog Item Dependencies

A Profile must be eligible for display before any Catalog Items associated with it can be eligible. Here is a graphic that introduces the concept of display eligibility, and how Profiles and Catalog Items interact.

Figure 2.1. Kavi Showcase Public Display

Diagram showing three sample Profiles with
related Catalog Items being conditionally displayed or hidden.

The boxes containing circles represent Profiles and their associated Catalog Items. The Profile for Tasty Cereal Company is eligible to be displayed, as are all it's Catalog Items.

The second Profile, belonging to Mike Stevenson (an individual), is displayed publicly—but only one of his Catalog Items is displayable. The other two items may be inactive or set not to display publicly.

The third Profile, for Cool Gadget Corp., is not displayed publicly, so none of the Catalog Items for this Profile are displayable.

Eligibility for Display

Assuming Kavi Showcase is configured to display Catalog Items as well as Profiles, Profile display eligibility is a precondition for Catalog Item display eligibility. There are three conditions that all Profiles and Catalog Items must meet in order to be eligible for display on all Kavi Showcase sites where default behavior is enforced: the Profile or catalog item must be active, approved and set to display publicly. But the organization may impose additional restrictions through available configuration options or customizations.

Three Principal Gating Factors

There are three principal requirements that Profiles and Catalog Items must meet in order to be eligible for display. A Profile or Catalog Item that fails to meet any of these three requirements isn't eligible for display. Since we can't be sure that items that meet all these criteria are eligible for display (your organization may have additional requirements, we'll consider Profiles and Catalog Items that meet these three principal requirements as "Potentially Displayable". A table showing the interactions of Profiles and dependent Catalog Items is available at the end of the page.

Status

Profiles can be either active or inactive. If a Profile is inactive, related Catalog Items aren't displayed.

If the config_profile_member_status option in Configure Kavi Showcase is set to 'Yes', Profile status will reflect the Profile owner's status in Kavi Members. For example, a member will be set to 'active' when their membership becomes current, so their Profile status will also be set to 'active'. If the member allows their membership to lapse so their account is deactivated (i.e., the Status field is set to 'inactive'), their Profile is also deactivated.

Profile status can always be set manually by the Showcase Admin. Inactive Profiles are only available to administrators—they aren't accessible through Member tools, nor are they eligible for display.

Catalog Item status is dependent on Profile status. If a Profile is inactive, all its associated Catalog Items are inactive.

Display Publicly

This option is available to administrators, but its purpose is to provide a switch that members can use to hide a Profile or Catalog Item until they are ready for it to be displayed.

The Display Publicly option is always available for Profiles, but is configurable for Catalog Items. If the config_hide_items option in Configure Kavi Showcase is set to 'Yes', the Display Publicly option will be available for catalog items. If it is set to 'No', the Display Publicly option won't be available so this restriction won't apply to Catalog Items.

The Display Publicly option can be used by Profile owners and contacts and administrators to keep Profiles hidden. When it is enabled for Catalog Items, administrators can set this switch, but member access to this switch is dependent on who the member is (i.e., what types they have been assigned) and the setting of configuration options in Configure Kavi Showcase that control whether members are allowed to edit or add catalog items. For more information on this topic, see Permissions.

State

Profiles and Catalog Items must be in an 'Approved' state to be eligible for display. If your Kavi Showcase installation doesn't have moderation enabled for Profiles or Catalog Items, Profiles and Catalog Items are automatically assigned the 'Approved' state when added. If moderation is enabled, new and edited Profiles and Catalog Items in a 'Pending' state are sent to a moderator for review so the organization can retain control over the kind of content that is displayed in its showcase. When a moderator approves a Profile or Catalog Item, its state is set to 'Approved'.

Note that its possible to have different versions of the same unique Profile or Catalog Item, with each version having a different state. As long as the unique object is 'Approved', the conditions described here apply to the object. For information on workflow states and object versions, see Workflow.

Other Display Restrictions

There are several other options that organization might use to restrict display. These are described in the following list.

Profiles that lack Catalog Items can be hidden

The hide_no_cat_profile option is available in Configure Kavi Showcase. If set to 'Yes', Profiles without any associated Catalog Items are not displayed.

Profiles and Catalog Items without images can be omitted in auto-featuring

If auto-featuring is enabled, selecting the Image/Logo option in the Configure Featured Profiles and Configure Featured Catalog Items tools to 'Yes' causes Profiles and Catalog Items without images to be ineligible for display.

Custom views

Your organization may define custom views and select Profiles or Catalog Items for display in custom view(s) depending on the setting of one or more custom view flags. Custom behavior is outside the scope of this document, but you can test whether a specific Profile or Catalog Item is displayed by searching or browsing for it.

Display Scenarios

This table illustrates how the principal factors described above can interact to affect whether a Profile and associated Catalog Item are potentially eligible for display. All scenarios include a Profile (Tasty Cereal Company) with a single associated Catalog Item (Wheat Bits). If your organization doesn't display Catalog Items, you may want to review just those rows that apply to the Profile.

There is a configuration option that can be set so that Profiles are hidden if they aren't associated with any displayable Catalog Items. These scenarios apply on your web site only if this option is not enabled.
